I stumbled upon Dominique Durand and Ivy by way of the Sundays
homepage. It lists bands/singers that have a similar style to
the Sundays, and lucky for me Ivy was on the list. Otherwise, I
would probably never have had the pleasure of hearing
Dominique's vocals. If you're a fan of the Sundays, you'll
probably also enjoy Ivy.
Ivy's
fifth full-length album, In The Clear, hit stores on
March 1. For more info on the new release, including an
updated bio, visit Ivy's official webpage,
thebandivy.
A few tour dates have already been announced, so be sure to
scroll down to check them out.
New to the site is a message
board where you can discuss Dominique Durand and Ivy.
In 2002, Ivy released Guestroom, a full-length CD of the
band covering some of their favorite tunes such as The Cure's
"Let's Go To Bed" and Steely Dan's "Only A Fool Would Say That."

In
promotion of their newest release, Long Distance, Ivy paid a
visit to the "new and improved" Black Cat in Washington, DC. This
was my second time seeing them in concert, and of course, they did not
disappoint.
Before the show, the band had a get-together with a few of Andy's
hometown friends. The sight of the Dominique, Andy and Adam
walking into the Red Room and sitting down at a table seemed to take a
lot of people off guard. Everyone seemed to keep their distance,
allowing them to socialize with their friends, which was nice.
If memory serves me correctly, the band took the stage around
10:30pm. They played a balanced mix of the old and new, performing
six songs from Long Distance and reaching back to 1994, playing
"I Guess I'm Just A Little To Sensitive."
Even though I snuck a few glances at the setlist during the show,
it was still a surprise to hear so much material from their previous
releases. It was really great hearing "Shallow" live again.
Although it's on the setlist, they didn't perform "These Are The Things
About You," which I was really looking forward to hearing, as it's one
of my faves.
Despite a few technical difficulties, the band kept a positive
attitude throughout the entire show. While introducing
"Lucy Doesn't Love You," Dominique joked that the song was huge
in Japan, putting emphasis on the word "huge," letting us all
know that the U.S. slacked a bit.
I was able to meet up with the band after the show, thanks to
David Mead, the opening act, who was nice enough to track them
down for me. They were kind enough to pose for two pics.
So I wouldn't look like I was standing on stilts in the second
photo, I bent down a bit and Andy helped the situation by
standing on his toes.
Big thanks to Dominique, Adam and Andy for being so generous and
putting on a terrific show. Although standing right in
front of the amplifier for the entire show wasn't the smartest
move in the world, it was worth the damage done to my right ear.
The ringing stuck around until 7pm the next day, but all's well
now!
I finally broke down and bought a camera with a zoon lens a couple
of days before the show and took about 20 or so shots of the
performance.
At the risk of sounding biased, the Washington, DC show was great.
Playing in a smaller venue made the show seem that much more intimate
(and allowed me to get a good look at Dominique!!) I don't think
I've ever been at a concert that seemed to be over so quickly. I
don't know how long their set was, but it seemed like they only
performed about 7 or 8 songs, when in fact it was 16. I wasn't able to
snag a pic with Dominique (she walked right by me on her way to the tour
bus after the show, but it was raining out and I didn't want her to get
all wet), but I did walk away with the set list. Notice the little
comment by "I've Got A Feeling". I have no idea who Jon is, but I wonder
if he knew about this prank!
There wasn't much banter with the audience, aside from Andy Chase
mentioning that he grew up and went to high school in the area and
Dominique noting that "Back In Our Town" is a personal favorite of hers.
And how could I forget Dominique kissing the hand of a fan who reached
out to her!! One of the many highlights was "Baker", performed
with a live trumpet (no keyboard sampling). If Ivy is coming to
your town definitely go...seeing and hearing them perform live is an
absolute must!!
